Charlotte County Artist Merle Hummell I'm an Ohio-born, depression kid with a 4-year attitude adjustment in the Navy. My schooling consisted of Ohio University and Bowling Green of Ohio for my undergraduate and Bowling Green, the University of Michigan and Northern Illinois for graduate study. Then for the next 30 years of my life, I worked, taught and displayed my art in every rundown or high class place that would give me a nod. At this time, my art can best be described as 3-dimensional design oriented fabrication of discarded bits and pieces of our society (a mirror to life). At my age, I have no burning desire to change life on this planet or make a great social, political or environmental statement. I now plan to enjoy being a retired senior and using my lifetime of skills and seeming inexhaustible catalog of ideas. In my life, I have been sympathized, empathized and pasteurized; yet, as the shallow critic of time has taken my youth, it has not dampened my spirit. What is a sculpture? It is a spatial relationship that is a special relationship.
